Performance 100 Update: Goals and Big Chances Created Have Been Separated

On the original Performance 100 graphic we combined goals and big chances created, to look at player or team output per 100 possessions where it matters most.

However, we've decided that the graphic will be more powerful if the two pieces of data are separated. As a result, Performance 100 data can be better used to analyse efficiency of creating chances, and managing attempts on goal.

Big chances created per 100 possessions can be compared with key pass figures to find out how regularly chances created are significant opportunities. Goals per 100 possessions can be cross-referenced with shots on target to see how often efforts on goal end up in the back of the net. The percentiles on our graphics greatly aid this comparison.

Let's take a look at a couple of examples, after showing the Performance 100 graphic key, in case you aren't familiar with how to read the graphic.

Firstly, here's Nikola Kalinic's Performance 100 data from the 2017-18 Serie A season with AC Milan. Nikola Kalinic had the second highest rate of key passes per 100 possessions in over 20 global divisions last season.

This is an extremely impressive statistic, but when adding big chances created, a different story emerges. Despite playing key passes so frequently, Kalinic wasn't ranked too far above the average figure for big chances created per 100 possessions.

Therefore, the Croatian was regularly setting up shots for his teammates, but very few of these shots were big chances, so were likely having a limited impact on the game. Perhaps Kalinic's key passes were mostly lay-offs for shots from outside the box, and perhaps his Milan teammates were opting to shoot too often.

Moving on to goals, here we have Performance 100 data for Ramon Abila of Boca Juniors, who also spent time on loan at Huracán last season. Abila is ranked well for shots on target, inside the top 20% of players in over 20 global leagues, and with more shots on target per 100 possessions than shots off target. However, Abila's shots on target figure doesn't particularly stand-out.

On the other hand, Abila's goals per 100 possessions does stand-out. Ramon is ranked 29th in over 20 global leagues in 2017 or 2017-18 for goals per 100 possessions. This suggests that Abila had a very impressive rate of turning shots on target into goals last season, which is noteworthy for scouts, analysts, coaches, journalists and fans.

As the two examples have shown, by separating goals and big chances created on our graphic, Performance 100 data becomes even more powerful as a method of learning about a player's style and qualities. The examples chosen were rather extreme, but the principle can be applied to in excess of 7,000 players, that we have data for.
